Community Services

At MCBC we ensure the development of our community continues. We believe we must nurture a sustainable society, where we can foster and enhance relationships between Canada and Malaysia. In line with our vision of fostering relationships, MCBC is taking on a challenge by seeking new ways to make a difference within our community. Addressing social issues and making a difference will not only improve our community in the long-run but will enhance our relationships within the Malaysian community. Our project for 2015 is IDEAS Academy (IA).

What Is Ideas Academy ?

IDEAS Academy is a Malaysian-Dutch joint venture between the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), a Malaysian not-for-profit think tank and the Stitching Young Refugee Cause (YRC). Their aim is to contribute to the education of undocumented children.

IDEAS Academy started in September 2014 and has since expanded to over 100 students with a growing waiting list. IDEAS Academy is endorsed by the Education Department of the United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia. How MCBC Assists

MCBC and our Members provide support by donating in-kind items and occasionally raising funds. We call upon our members to lend a hand when and where they can. Examples of past assistance include a field trip to Jump Street trampoline center, helping them move their school to a new location, and providing funds to purchase an LCD projector and whiteboards, and supplied transportation for students to study Adobe software in Cyberjaya. Currently, MCBC is focusing on IA’s immediate needs while connecting them to persons/companies who can donate classroom supplies, laptops, projectors, kitchen supplies and other goods. If you are able to lend assistance, please send us an email, and let us know what you have in mind. We’ll work with you to make it happen!

Refugees In Malaysia

The UNHCR has registered 146,020 refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia. Many children have been exposed to an unstable environment and theIDEAS Academy has focused on providing sustainable education for some of these children. They provide secondary education using the Ontario, Canada curriculum. MCBC Board of Governor and CSR Committee Chairman, Rolf Beutel, stated, “IDEAS Academy provides people with an education, which is the best possible advantage in life”, MCBC can help extend this opportunity to many of these teens.
